Ammonite Audio Counterweight for 9″ GrooveMaster Tonearms
We are pleased to announce that our own modular counterweight is now available for use with 9″ GrooveMaster II and III tonearms. This new counterweight is much shorter than the standard GrooveMaster design, which means a 9″ GrooveMaster arm can now be used on turntables with traditional dust covers, such as the Technics SL-1200, and even while playing records with the cover closed. Our new counterweight is suitable for headshell/cartridge combinations weighing from 18g to 32g, enabling straightforward adjustment of VTF by rotating the outer weight over a threaded inner sleeve.
What’s the problem? The standard GrooveMaster counterweight swings out so far that it hits the dust cover, as shown in this picture (GrooveMaster III threaded counterweight, Technics SL-1200):

The picture below shows our Ammonite Audio weight positioned and adjusted for a heavy Ortofon SPU cartridge, tracking at 4g, which pretty much represents the heaviest combination likely to be used by most owners. You can see in this picture below that the whole counterweight sits well within the plinth top plate, allowing plenty of space to clear the dust cover:

Please note that this weight is only suitable for 9″ GrooveMaster arms, and is not suitable for the 10″ and 12″ variants. Why not? Simply, these longer arms are not typically fitted to the turntables where the standard GrooveMaster counterweight runs into problems with a dust cover, so for 10″ and 12″ arms, we say just stick to the standard GrooveMaster counterweight.
