Jelco SG-1 electronic stylus force gauge – a cut above the myryad of cheap devices available online. Not only is it accurate to 0.01g, but it’s been designed so that the non-magnetic stainless steel measurement platform is at the correct height, eg as the stylus would normally be sitting on an LP, as you can see in the picture below which compares the SG-1 side by side with a cheap ‘eBay’ stylus force gauge.
Does this matter? With some tonearms, very much so since Vertical Tracking Force (VTF) can vary quite noticeably with quite small variations in arm height, in relation to the LP surface. It is important that the stylus pressure/force is measured at the same height above the platter as a regular LP. Not all gauges get this right, but the SG-1 definitely does.
Given a ‘Recommended’ award in HiFi Choice magazine, whose reviewer wrote:
An inaccurate reading is not an issue with the SG-1, it works extremely well and is one of the most accurate digital stylus gauges I have come across. The reading is stable, clearly visible and makes setting my Kiseki Blue NOS moving coil cartridge to its recommended 1.75g tracking force a breeze. The SG-1 digital stylus gauge is a highly practical accessory for any turntable lover wanting to keep vinyl playback perfectly on track. NR
Suffice to say that this handy and very compact little stylus force gauge is a great tool for correctly setting VTF and there is no need to pay more!
