Phasemation PP-200 Stereo Moving Coil Cartridge

Phasemation PP-200 Stereo Moving Coil Cartridge – the new ‘entry level’ cartridge from Phasemation of Japan.  Clearly related to existing Phasemation models, it incorporates some new features to bring an increase in output, and suspension refinements for even better tracking ability (Phasemation cartridges are already the best tracking moving coil cartridges that we have used and heard).  There has been no compromise in materials, so Phasemation have used a solid milled aluminium body, gently shaped to further control resonance, and the PP-200 uses the same boron cantilever and fine line contact tip as other Phasemation cartridges.  So, no compromises that you’d normally expect at this price.

The PP-200 definitely shares the same essential ‘character’ as other Phasemation cartridges and offers a compellingly open, vibrant and musical performance, with very low surface noise and impeccable in-groove manners.  In isolation, there’s no way that anyone would reasonably want for more, but (maybe as expected) the more expensive Phasemation cartridges do offer more, by which we mean better spacial resolution and soundstaging, progressively better as you go from PP-300 to the astonishing PP-2000.  But, the PP-200 is astonishingly good for a sensible price, and at that price point it is probably the best we’ve heard.
