The Phasemation T-320 has replaced the old T-300 model, at the same price, with extra features, in a smarter finish. So, it is still an affordable stereo step-up transformer, for connecting low impedance moving coil cartridges to moving magnet (MM) phono stages. The T-320 has a handy bypass switch which means users who swap in moving magnet cartridges can simply switch out the transformers, rather than fiddle with swapping out cables. We don’t think you’ll find another SUT that is as well built, nor as hum-free as this, at this price point. Gain is 26dB (20x) so a great partner for Phasemation cartridges and broadly compatible with most other low output moving coil cartridges, but do call for advice if you are unsure. Free UK shipping. Description
Phasemation T-320 Stereo Moving Coil Step-Up Transformer is a development of the old T-300, with a smarter case with luxurious 10mm thick anodised alloy front panel, and the addition of a handy bypass switch. Like the T-300, the T-320 was developed in-house by Phasemation and achieves excellent technical and sound performance by winding the transformers with extra-thick low-loss copper wires (Primary: 0.32mm dia., Secondary 0.12mm dia.) around a large EI core made of thick 78% super permalloy core material. This results in the best lower-band-linearity and the highest step-up efficiency. In addition, the winding structure of the transformer layers has resulted in a wider bandwidth, with excellent phase characteristics.Phase distortion in the audible band has been reduced drastically and auditory localisation has also been optimised. By adding a shield board at the centre of chassis to divide the left from the right, channel separation has been substantially improved.
The new bypass switch enables users who run MC cartridges alongside MC to swap between them without needing to unplug cables – the switch simply engages or bypasses the internal SUTs as required.
Phasemation have paid great attention to minimising the T-320’s susceptibility to outside vibration. The step-up transformers are supported within polyethylene foam, which provides good physical isolation as well as preventing cavity resonance inside the case.
The chassis base and top covers are made from 1.2mm and 1.6 mm steel plates, with copper plating and smart black finishing. All the parts are assembled with the stainless-steel non-magnetic screws to minimise the influence of any magnetic distortion, to maintain a clear sound character.
How Does it Sound?
Even before plugging anything into the T-320, it impresses by being substantially bigger and heavier than the photos (and modest pricing) might suggest. But, we are glad to report that the sound quality and musical reproduction through the T-320 is pretty much as good as anything we’ve heard at this price. For anyone needing a quiet, hum-free and musical SUT with around 20x gain, the Phasemation T-320 is almost guaranteed to delight, with a really spacious depth of sound and a lovely organic and free-flowing musical character that is really rather special. It is a copper-bottomed musical delight and is very highly recommended.
