Zavfino 1877Phono’s new Lycan 270G Record Weight, incorporating a clever mix of materials and decoupling to ensure that record vibrations are effectively reduced, damped and absorbed.  The weight has a delrin centre spindle grip that is decoupled from the main machined alloy structure by two silicone rubber ‘o’ rings, so this keeps energy from the record and the turntable’s bearing away from each other.  A smart leather pad ensures an acoustically optimised and non-marking interface with the record label.  Four rubber ‘o’ rings around the weight provide peripheral wave damping.  The weight is topped off by a smart oak disc.

Compared to Zavfino 1877Phono’s simpler  but still wonderful Zavfino Weight, the Lycan 270G is physically slimmer, and that means no trouble closing the lid on most turntables.  Its weight is juts enough for it to provide some mass damping, without upsetting a turntable’s suspension, or motor control systems.  We find that customers love the idea of a really heavy record weight, but you really don’t need much mass to do the job – these things don’t flatten records.

What does it do for the sound?  Firstly, the Lycan 270G provides a greater degree of depth, definition and ‘air’ to recordings – things just sound more ‘natural’, ‘deeper, and ‘organic’ compared to playing a record with no weight in place.  Unlike its cheaper Zavfino Weight stablemate, the Lycan 270G brings forth real sonic delicacy which means that instruments suddenly become beguilingly ‘real’ sounding.  Somewhat to our surprise, the joyously exuberant but not particularly refined Ortofon SPU#1S cartridge was somewhat transformed into something far more ‘delicate’, and indeed more ‘expensive’ sounding.

We are quite bowled over by the new Lycan 270G and would not think for one moment of playing any record without it.  It’s a great system upgrade.
